We set out the following privacy policy in order to handle and protect the personal information of everyone who uses this site appropriately.

1. Information we collect

When you contact us, you may provide information such as your name, email address, affiliation and the content of your enquiry.

We may also use cookies and similar technologies to collect information such as the pages you viewed, the date and time of use, and details of your device and browser, in order to understand how the site is used and to improve it.

2. How we use personal information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes.

• Replying to enquiries
• Contacting you about reporting, information, and work with researchers and specialists
• Running and improving this site, and producing its content
• Responding to misuse and to security problems
• Responding as required under applicable law

Where we would use personal information beyond these purposes, we obtain the individual’s consent as necessary, except where the law provides otherwise.

3. Providing personal information to third parties

We do not provide personal information to third parties without the individual’s consent, except where the law provides otherwise.

Where we entrust the handling of personal information to an outside contractor, we select an appropriate contractor and exercise the necessary management and supervision.

4. Cookies and analytics

We may use cookies and analytics tools in order to understand how the site is used and to improve its content and usability.

The information collected in this way does not normally, by itself, identify an individual.

Cookies can be disabled in your browser settings. Some functions may then not work properly.

Specifically, we use the tools below. Through cookies and similar technologies, these tools send part of a visitor’s information to an external party — the company providing the tool.

Google Analytics / Google Tag Manager (provided by Google LLC)

• Information sent: the URL and title of the page viewed, the referrer, the date, time and duration of the visit, the type of device, OS and browser, an approximate location (city level), and the identifier stored in the cookie
• Sent to: Google LLC
• Purpose: analysing how this site is used, and improving its content and usability
• How it is handled at the destination: Google Privacy Policy / How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services

This information does not include anything that identifies you on its own, such as your name, address or telephone number.

If you wish to stop this being sent, you can disable cookies in your browser settings, or use the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

5. Advertising

This site carries no third-party advertising. Nor do we provide browsing information or personal information to advertising distributors for the purpose of serving ads.

This site is run by Japan Bansho Co., Ltd., which operates the edible bird’s nest brand “BANSHO”.

Articles and other content may mention us, BANSHO, or research, activities and products we are connected with. We treat these separately from advertising placed in return for a fee from a third party.

Where content involves a relationship with us, our basic policy is to tell readers about it in a way they can see.

6. External services and social media

This site may carry links to Instagram and to other external websites and social media services.

For how personal information is handled at those destinations, please see the privacy policy of each service provider.

7. Management of personal information

We take the necessary and appropriate security measures to prevent the leakage, loss, alteration or unauthorised access of the personal information we hold.

8. Disclosure, correction and deletion

Where an individual requests the disclosure, correction, suspension of use or deletion of personal information we hold about them, we confirm their identity and respond appropriately in accordance with the law.

9. Changes to this privacy policy

We may change this privacy policy as the running of this site or the services it uses change, or as the law is amended.

Where there is a significant change, we will give appropriate notice on this site.
